Player Tracking System. Introduction.

The main idea is to develop a system, which is constantly tracking all players on the court during a game, for example using video or RFID technology. The data collected with this system could be used for many different distribution channels and purposes, for example:

  • It would allow coaches to analyse in detail how well offensive plays were executed, plays of future opponents, mistakes in defence etc

  • Animated play-by-play shown in real-time on the public website

  • It might allow to develop online games where users can play interactively in real-time considering actual moves on the court (applications like this exist already for other sports like motor sports or baseball, however it seems to be difficult to find a solution in basketball)

  • It would allow to collect additional statistical data during games, for example the distance covered by players, how fast they are moving, etc.

  • If integrated with the stats software it might make the job for the statisticians easier as some information could be taken automatically (for example position of a shot) and the data would be more precise.
